What makes us who we are?

Awais Amjad | 12 years ago

I like traveling and would want to take a road trip across the planet one day, love watching movies and I'd want to take flying lessons if possible.etc etc etc.

All of us have things and people we like and the ones we dont. It intrigues my mind where it comes from. I am sure its not from our parents coz we mostly have completely different choices when it comes to most of the things.

The Question is, What do you think is the process that leads us to liking one thing and disliking another?? What makes us define our likes and dont-likes??

I didn't mention any mental process or maturing thing in my answer.
There could be lot of different dimensions. Like on your tea coffee example there is a possibility that you never tried coffee in your life, or you have some bad things\memories related to coffee (like it reminds you of someone ;) and that pains you) like my father used to beat me a lot when when I was in 6,7 grade and that beating has the special month of december as I had to prepare for Cadet College tests and I was not good at that. So m 27 now and I still hate december.
So there are things which have some reasons and some just appear as your mind unfolds itself as you grow

Why don't you look like me?
Osama Shah | 12 years ago
I never said you did, anyways, the reason that you gave, may explain a few scenarios but not most of them. The easiest answer to anything is that God made us that way, and thats why I dont look like you :p
I havent tried coffee and I dont like it? seriously! thats absurd. Its needless to say that I tried coffee thats why i hate it but my question was why did i hate it when you tried it and loved it? Because God made me that way? yeah i agree, but is there any un-heavenly reason for that?
How did I develop that non-physical self of mine that chooses between good things? Influences dont count coz they cant and dont explain everything. Everybody had some ass-whipping by their parents including me but I dont particularly hate any month of the year due to that reason. So its different for me. But Why so?

Wait brother! Where did I give the heavenly God-made reason?? I do have lot of points on that side but I didn't mention a single one in my answer because some people think that they can get logic out of everything. I think we should analyze what we do in 24 hrs and then ask questions in the same caliber.
Osama Shah | 12 years ago
"Why don't you look like me?" literally suggests that I guess, but well I might be wrong considering your slightly different point of view, which is???? Please tell!
Same goes for the argument that some people want a logical explanation of everything which aint exactly possible, thats what my question suggests atleast upto some extent, but in actual i wanted to know others's point of view about "If" they believe there is a logical reason to this argument only, not everything.
And I have no idea what did you intend to suggest with this "I think we should analyze what we do in 24 hrs and then ask questions in the same caliber" Please enlighten me!

The why i was referring to points toward the notion of 'an act of god', or 'the purpose in life' and the kind of similar statements which cannot be included in any scientific literature because either it is an end of discussion in the former case or it is entirely out of the domain of testable and falsifiable answers which science aims to come up with (the latter case).

a mistake! looking for logical rather than scientific answer... btw science and logic go hand in hand actually.

and

"..about perhaps this is why it cant be explained because it is complex." not perhaps, the complication is a fact..
...............................................................................

besides, i'd like to know your take on the why earth revolves around the sun... and unlike you mentioned i want the answer to be unscientific.. and then see how much sense that makes.

the best answers to the why questions are found when you ask 4 year old children about it.

Yeah i kinda got it wrong in putting it into words, I didnt actually mean logical like i kinda said in the proceeding words, I wanted it to be more based on common knowledge or human instincts and I said so because its almost a dead end if we look for a scientific solution coz science like you said is still making mere speculations as to why that is so.
Speaking of answering your question, I think this case is not as subtle as my original argument is, so one can only wonder why is it so. And well if I had any way of answering it not based on science I wouldnt have asked the question in the first place.
Scientifically, every body in the universe has to be in motion in order to avoid destruction. Hence, all the star, planets, satellites etc are in a state of motion. Thats the scientific explanation of this WHY. So science does have some WHY answers afterall.
But what I conceive from your response is that neither science nor anything else can explain my original question, as yet.
Thank you for your answer.

"every body in the universe has to be in motion in order to avoid destruction". thats an answer to a 'why' question.. and is not scientific.. the actual answer is a big topic and is not appropriate for this forum..

they are not moving because they are afraid to be destroyed, the 'how' of this movement has a different answer. ofcourse the absence of movement might lead to its destruction, but the notion of possible destruction wont make it move....

to put in other words:
cause: lack of movement, effect: destruction... OK somewhat makes sense
but if
cause: possibility of destruction, effect: movement... errm! nope, doesnt fit in.

indeed it makes some sense. But then again, why did you "Feel those specific emotions" that you felt while taking tea the very first time? :p But I agree that we do adapt to stuff due to cultural and social reasons. That does define our likes and dislikes up to some extent.
Awais Amjad | 12 years ago
Well its experience because of which we feel certain emotions ..

yeah it can be termed as a part of our identity too, like we have a unique face, body etc and similarly a unique set of choices.
