i am a smoker.. kind of. for 7 years i have been smoking 2-3 times daily.. now its increased to about 5 though. and its difficult for even me to let go. but for a person like me, the physical effects dont kick in at all (WHENEVER i quit, and i do that often..i.e. whenever i am in my hometown), only the psychological ones are significant but controlable.. i can imagine what an uphill journey it would be for a chain smoker to quit.

many people who have started smoking way after me are now chain smokers or atleast smoke more than me. the reason i think i havent plunged into it that much is probably because i dont have a habit linked to a cig.. e.g. i dont smoke after a meal. i dont keep it with me when i go out (for shopping etc.. i do rely on frends however), i dont do it first thing in the morning. for many people, breaking the habitual part pretty much decreases their overall ciggi intake. 10 cigs a day is far better than 20... so steps should be taken to atleast reduce the daily dosage.. which is what i think is possible for every smoker.

i dont know how effective nicotine gums or nicotine patches are, i tried the local nicotine gum.. (naswar :P).. it worked but i got hooked on to it instead.. so i am skeptical of the gums

my dont remember my dad smoking. mom says he was a chain smoker too but he quit because he saw the little me put a cigi butt in my mouth. Dad says it did take two months for the urge to completely go away. in that case it was complete will power. So in the end, it all comes down to whether the person atleast wants to do it or not, else its no use.

i see alot of friends here giving net links, do check them out.
