Is Imam Masjid a government employee?

Just in mosques like Faisal Masjid. Apart from that Imam is appointed by the locals

I recently watched a drama which made me think of the same thing so I asked some of the people in Pakistan, The Imams of famous masajid like faisal mosque or badshahi mosques has Imams appointed by the govt and they get paid a certain amount of money. But the local mosque's imam are selected by the common people or responsible people of the area n they do get paid too but that not a handsome amount, in some cases people give them the extra stuff like when a kid finishes his Quran or on "roza khuchai" Im not sure whether its right or wrong though they shud be paid a proper amount of money as its their only way to earn bread and butter.

Imam masjid hmare scoiety main sab se zyada ignored aur low payed log hotay hain aksar.! Only in very few mosques jin ke funding direct mahma okaf se hoti hy imam masjid are given ranks laikin mohallay ke masjido main zyada tar commities hoti hain jo imam sahib ko point krti hain aur uss main zyada tar logo k apnay mufad , pasand na pasand shamil hoti hy.!

Mostly in Cities, the Imams are Govt. Employees but in far off areas, Imams are appointed locally with a very low amount of money as low as Rs.1200/-, Oh my God....!
