Why do SOME Pakistanis living in Pakistan act Western?

First thing Sohail, things are not as simple as the way you question them. What you have got to understand first of all is that the West is now at an extraordinary peak of power in relation to other civilizations. Western civilization is both Western and modern. Non-Western civilizations are attempting to become modern by becoming Western. Non-Western civilizations continue to attempt to acquire everything that is part of being modern. We are confronted today with a generation of youth unable to obtain strong, purposeful identities; a real "identity crisis" has occurred. There exists a culture conflict in Pakistan which having started in the 19th century has greatly accelerated since the formation of Pakistan. Two major explanations can be given for this conflict: a) a lack of cultural knowledge which may be responsible for poor identification with the Pakistani culture and/or b) the use of Western culture as a yard-stick of measurement of the cultural refinement of a person.
According to you, Pakistanis in Pakistan think that speaking English or knowing English makes them feel cool, and you're much vexed at the way they're adopting all things western from dresses and parties to the whole of the lifestyle, well don't you see? With English being international language and western education superior to the rest, they Need to practise speaking and improve. And they Have to, since they, unlike you, are dwelling in the east, not in America itself. As for adopting all things western, I've already stated there are the two major explanations (as stated above). Also in this modern age of technology and mass culture, maintaining the old (the cultural) is becoming more and more difficult, while at the same time the youth seem to be rebelling. There comes again the identity crisis.
So what we actually need is to live in the modern world but without simply imitating blindly the ways followed by the West. We need institutes which may help facilitate improving or assisting in the timely cultural changes. And most importantly, we need to bring a change on 'individual' level first.

Firstly, I see our so-called enlightened media the biggest culprit for this outbreak; young cohort of Pakistan follows this Media blindly and as a result we tend to follow what’s not meant for us.

Secondly, the stream of Money in the country, by stream of money I mean the Dollars/Euros/Pounds Pakistanis abroad are sending in here, these arrivistes are polluting the true culture of ours.(No Offence to anyone on this and I do apologize if this one hurts anyone here.)

Thirdly, the policies of General Musharraf which injected all this stuff to our cultural roots, I don’t know whom did was he following and might be he was right but he got those policies implemented in a erroneous way on a wrong Nation and our cultural roots are getting infectious. (No offence though to him or anyone)

But in the race of getting Westernized; What we have lost is huge! :(

firstly asnwering ur family who speaks to u in english , it's natural for them to want to show u their ability to speak in a language u hear everyday. U appreciate Urdu because u don't hear the common man speaking it , n vice a versa.

Knowing English doesn't make you cool , and that's where all the problem lies, because the ppl who speak it , the "YO Frankie " crowd don't learn it properly thus the grammatical errors etc still remain since their purpose is to "be cool" impress HAWt girls or some other such crazy reason. Learning English should be encouraged as it's an international Language and it's something you need to be fluent in if you want to pursue your education abroad or even for a good job. But what we don't need is the Fake American accent .I know entire schools where the kids only speak in American accent. The entire school no matter what grade, i have a class fellow who hasn't been out of isb to even Lahore, but she speaks with an American accent. Why? Then there are those who don't have a grip on the American accent and they switch between pakistani /ameican/british and you can't follow a word they are saying plus add in the mistakes and it's mashed potato pie.

It's okay to emulate something as far as it's within bounds . Girls will wear backless sleeveless kamzees and still criticize someone who wears a full sleeved t-shirt with jeans.(It's happened to me). So then there's no point in criticizing for the sake of criticizing because our culture/ religion doesn't even allow that , so there are influences of the Hindi movies etc we watch.. I think there was always drinking/drugs/partying going on , just more underground, now it's more open and more common .And then each class is trying to copy the unattainable intangible lifestyle of the "cool" rich people above them so it's spiraling out of control with everyone reaching for what is in reality an unglamorous lifestyle , that remains out of their reach.

First of all I dont think that the said issue is majorly prevalent , there may be one in a couple of hundred cases that might act that way. The thing is, the ability to speak English language (and understanding it) is considered to be a sign of being a member of a more civilized part of our society which is kinda true too coz that knowledge doesnt come naturally for our people, after all its a foreign language and one learns it over a certain time period..
Speaking of adopting the western culture, nobody can deny the fact the wearing a particular dress can not change the fact that they belong to the East and not to the West, so I guess if we are not considering Islamic grounds that aint such a big issue either. But if we do consider Islam then short /sleeveless Qameez and ankle revealing Shalwars etc etc although a part of our own culture in general, are still un-islamic.
So well I'd again say speaking English or wearing a western dress does not mean that we have the right to judge someone as if they are westernizing. And well not following religion is one's personal affair. What would you do if you saw someone wearing inappropriate clothes at a public place?? Would you go to them and ask them not to wear them?? The answer is No!
So all we can do is correct ourselves I guess. Thats why they say dont follow the crowd, do what you think is right.

well, the british ruled over us for more than 300 yelars, and they did not do it humbly. their aloof attitude, modern lifestyle, etc seems to have left an impression on us and we can't help but think that being similar to them makes one a more civilized person.
it's not just pakistan. this 'problem' is like a souvenir for all those nations the english men ruled over.

plus you're living in the US. to some extent that fact intimidates people in pakistan and they try their best to be on par with you

speaking in English doesn't mean that the person is acting western ... !
its just the upbringing ... and the way u talk normally ... if u speak in english with ur family or friends may be ther usually talk like this .. it doesnt mean that they dont respect urdu .. its just the medium to talk.. dont integrate it with westernism ... !

There are certain things in your question which i don't consider as 'westernized'. We are now living in a world where its consider totally 'normal' to talk in English. And obviously Fashion change with time in Pakistan too so one should not object on stylish hairs or dressing. Yes fashion is affected by media and like every other country around the globe, We Pakistanis also get affected by it but that doesn't mean that we are less Pakistani. These things don't make us love Pakistan less. I guess in certain limits(not going against religious boundaries), there is no harm in Pakistanis getting modern with time.

it does depend upon the society one lives in... in the pashtun areas if you know pashto and start talking in urdu... its awkward. i mean if somebody does it infront of me, ill poke him first. and thats how social norms are. speaking another language when you know the local one is not prohibited but is plain awkward and uncool. if youre non native in our area, then its another story. a native person unable to speak pashto in the correct manner or wordings at times becomes the target of what we all call 'taking'(poking fun and hurling puns) in friendly circles, and i guess its justified to some extent :P, i myself being a prominent victim in such settings :D.
in punjab region, things are different. regrettably punjabi has been relegated to the language of paindoos. and i feel similar is happening somewhat with urdu in affluent societies. and these things start from home with children. i dont know how to change it, or whether deeming such attitude bad and trying to change it is ok even, because i dont think judging morals based on foreign appearance and language is the correct way to go. but that being said, deeming urdu or punjabi as the language of downtrodden class is utterly unacceptable also.

speaking in english is not acting to b modern or westernized.its very essential to know it to cope with the present situation of world.i agree that we can avoid it when talking to someone who knows urdu but it becomes hard if ur used to speaking fluent english so its not acting.as far as looks are concerned then yes there is a clear difference between those who adopt western style and those who copy(there is a difference between the two).and drinking gambling clubs are being copied then we cant say west is being copied its simply that bad is being copied because even west consider them bad but voilate their religious laws.in conclusion ur complain is not worth making.U BETTER STOP ACTING WESTERN URSELF AND STOP MAKING ILLUMINATI SIGNS.WHAT MESSAGE R U TRYING TO GIVE?

we are badly impressed by the western nations and their ways influenced on us special our youth ....according to youth its co0o0ol to follow them but it is simply insane...
