I dont think that's true... I know loads of people who opt for other fields besides just engineering or medical. There's accounting (and different types of it), environmental studies (good scope for jobs in foreign countries) and architecture, along with fine arts, and business administration. People misinterpret it when they say that medical and engineering are the only two 'professional' fields.
However, there ARE cases where I've seen people (especially girls) limit themselves to fields like medical. Some think it's their *ticket* to getting a good rishta in the future, lol. Also, I have, more than often, heard aunties talk about how they'd love to have a doctor bahoo in the family :p It is these pointless criteria that drive young girls these days to 'secure' their future in such a way :/ I mean honestly... what good is a medical degree when at the end of the day all you want is to get married and have kids and do the dishes :/ You might as well get a degree in home economics! But only if the aunties/sasoo mas gave a home economics degree that much credit...
And perhaps the boys these days opt more for engineering degrees simply because of the diversity it offers, and perhaps also because of the job opportunities.
Also... an engineering degree makes you an Engineer. A medical degree makes you a Doctor. The sound of it makes people go "Ooooooooh" :D (unlike being a simple 'accountant' or 'mein nay BSc kiya hua hai...' :P)
