Actually, I intentionally use the term 'servant' in order to see the reaction on it. For sure, it could be taken as a derogatory term in some contexts. As you pointed it out yourself, the concept of maids as such is in other countries too, but the question is of how they are treated (with respect) and perceived (status). Of course, this could vary from person to person as some might 'exploit' their maids as well. What is at times also obvious is the way people behave towards them especially when it comes to talking with them.
And I agree, the job itself produces employment. Interesting is, however, the mistrust that is somewhat mostly there.
