Why does Pakistan have a servant keeping culture?

Servants are treated like a family member here .. people hire some servants for fulltime i.e. they one go home once a month or so .. their living, clothes, all necessary things are taken care by the family ...
and some servants are part time who just do their work and leave ...
The Culture for servants in pakistan is traditional and came from rich families where the lady dont work and hire ppl to work for them ... even to wash their hairs ... but the trends modified and it became the profession for the poor ppl ...!

I think Maid or "Maasi" is a the word used here .... You are making servant sound more like Slave :) (which is not the case)....

A lot of poor people come from villages for such maid jobs. Due to the high poverty, these maids are easily available at nominal pay. In fact its a good thing if you can afford, you are actually producing employment for poor people.

And I think concept of Maids and Nanies is also in the West.

Although the bad side is, this person is not an equal status member of the house, and employing children as maids is also common.

When you can afford a servant, there is no harm in keeping one.

first, i would agree with aaquib sahab, some families may be able to afford it.
second, if you live in a place where the women are left at home to do the housework, she might need a helping hand to do so. and with the rise of educated daughters, no one is left at the house but the mother. but, say, even before that educated daughters thing, i guess the middle class and the rich people have this peer pressure going on. given that pakistan is a close knit community, mores, norms, trends and fads can easily spread like wildfire and stay for a long long time. it's like, the popular girls get a red shirt, so those who can afford a red shirt will buy it and wear it. :) but i could be wrong.

I think this culture is everywhere, not specifically in Pakistan. Well, I don't think its wrong to keep servants. It depends on how you are treating them. Treat them like u will like to be treated when u r in their place. See we have two maids and my mom pamper them alot :D so they are always happy at work.

its a supply and demand phenomenon. someone needs job, you need a servant and hence the employment deal. Its because of the lack of laws or their implementation that such a question is even being asked. strengthen and enforce the labor laws and there wouldnt be any problem.
